222. Make a Flower Arrangement

When I was just a young girl I thought I would grow up to be many things; an Oscar-winning actress, a real estate investor that would give Trump a run for his money and, lastly, a uber-in-demand wedding florist that could turn drab into dramatic dazzle. Though, as of yet, I am none of these things I did try my hand at floral artistry to complete this goal on my bucket list.

Not being able to bear the thought of spending hours on my craft and having the flowers wilt in a matter of days, I went the "fake" route. Before you shun me by not using fresh varietals, let me say that they make some really good artificial stems these days. I'm not really talking about the quality you might find a your local craft store, I'm speaking of the higher grade florals you can find at shops specific to designers. On several occasions I actually had to reach out and touch a leaf to check its lack of freshness. Of course, you will be spending about double the money, but it will be worth the end result.

There really was no rhyme or reason to my design logic, more just selecting my favorite stems in the store, taking them to the craft table and attempting to create something amazing. Once I got started I couldn't stop, making an arrangement for each room in my home. Watch out…next time I will dabble with real flowers, as long as they don't have thorns or need water.

142. Relax in a Natural Hot Spring

Natural Hot Springs exist all over the world and are defined as sites where groundwater is discharged at a particular location. Out of all the places in the world, I was lucky enough to relax in a Hot Spring at the Tabacon Resort in Arenal, Costa Rica. The amazing resort, located at the base of the Arenal Volcano, features five thermal pools for your lounging pleasure, along with several other scattered pools on the grounds. This eco-friendly resorts water flows naturally by gravity and ranges in temperature from 77 to 122 degrees.

Relaxing in the springs is free if you are a guest at the hotel, otherwise it will cost you about 90 bucks for a day pass. It's worth spending the $200 to stay the night in the hotel as well.

Once we checked in we immediately headed across the street to embark on this new adventure. We were greeted at the springs by a large pool with a swim-up bar, perfect place to start our experience. I ordered one of those fruity "I have an umbrella" chick drinks that complemented the heat of the water I was waist-deep in. It would have been just as easy to spend the whole day right here, but that would not have gotten this item checked off my bucket list. We venture through what seemed like a maze of bridges each one surrounded by streaming water or rain forest foliage, in other words wherever you turned it was visually amazing.

I at least dipped my toes in each pool which ranged in temperature, from comfortably luke warm to "get me freakin' out of here, I think I have third degree burns!" Don't get me wrong, this girl loves a steamy hot tub, but at 122 degrees I couldn't get beyond my big toe. I finally settled myself  in a mid-temped spring, sat back to take in the breathtaking view and watch the toucans fly overhead.

5 Bucket List Books Reviewed

The Wish List, Barbara Ann Kipfer
Written by the same author as 14,000 Things to be Happy About, The Wish List is a catalogue of close to 6,000 unexpected goals, everything from write a love poem to watch the sun set over Machu Picchu. The best part about this book is the massive amount of aspirations that are listed, you'll be sure to find quite a few to add to your own life-to-do-list. They even include blank spots for you to incorporate anything they might have missed. The problem is that the goals are not categorized in any way, so make sure you mark everything you are interested in the first time around because you most likely won't be able to find it again. The Wish List is strictly a "list" book, if you are looking for inspirational anecdotes or educational information, this is not the one for you.

5 Bucket List Goals From This Book: Live in a Castle with a Moat, Be a Train Conductor, Adopt a Pet from the Humane Society, Play PacMan and Fly a Cargo Plane.

101 Things To Before You Die, Richard Horne
Richard Horne has also written 101 Things NOT to do Before You Die. This book features 101 of, what seems like, the most popular bucket list goals, such as, see the space shuttle launch and ride the world's biggest roller coasters. This is a fun life-to-do List book with journal space to keep track of goals achieved, star stickers so you can reward yourself upon completion and informative factoids about each one. Once completed, it can be kept as somewhat of an autobiography of your adventures. The only negative is, due to the limited amount of goals, you most likely will just use this as a supplement to your own list.

5 Bucket List Goals From This Book: Catch a Fish with Your Bare Hands, Meet Your Idol, Invent Something, Bungee Jump and Crash an A-List Party.

2,001 Things to Do Before You Die, Dane Sherwood
2,001 Things to Do Before You Die is a handy check list that is the shorter version of The Wish List (mentioned above). Just like Kipfers book, this is just a list of goals with sporadic inspirational quotes throughout. Some of the aspirations are redundant (ie: get call waiting & get rid of call waiting) and highly unlikely (like waking up next to Brad Pitt). If I had to choose between the two bucket list books, I would opt for The Wish List instead.

5 Bucket List Goals From This Book: Kiss the Blarney Stone, Make Paper Dolls, Build an Igloo, Be Silent for a Week and Start a Pillow Fight.

This Book Will Change Your Life, Benrick
This book is a highly illustrated guide for living a hysterical life for the next 365 days. If you are looking to mix-it-up for the next year with kooky, fun goals than choose this book. For instance, on Day 84 you will throw away an apple core in a park, mark the spot and come back in 20 years to see your apple tree and on Day 197 you will improve your signature. This may not be the inspirational bucket list you are looking for, but it will prove to be amusing and entertaining.

5 Bucket List Goals From This Book: Choose your Final Meal on Death Row and Make it, Be on the Lookout for the Paranormal, Walk Barefoot on Grass, Try a Food that Scares You and Get a Hobby.

1,000 Places to See Before You Die, Patricia Schultz
This book is the Big Daddy of all life lists for travel. If you have ever thought about going there, it is probably listed here. It is a hard core reference book, that has just as much information as inspiration. This is a tightly researched guide, which includes intriguing trivia and photographs. The only issue is trying to decide where to go on your first adventure; Halong Bay, Lizard Island Resort or Manual Antonio National Park?

5 Bucket List Goals From This Book: Hike at Yosemite National Park, Bike Great Ocean Road, Balloon in Burgandy, Dog Sled in Scandanavia and Fish at Li River.

164. Take a New Route to Work

Yes. On the surface, you may think that this is a super-lame goal….but, hear me out. {Besides I believe that any new experience could NOT possibly be lame, you should know that by now!}

How many of you have taken the same route to work everyday; you have the seven stoplights timed perfectly, you pass that same powder-blue house with cream trim that desperately needs a paint touch-up and all the folks outside mowing their lawns will always stop for a moment to wave? Then you definitely need to break out of your monotony of your day-to-day life and this could be one of the simplest ways to do it.

You would think that this would be the easiest goal on my list, but when you only live 4 blocks from work it can be quite tricky. To accomplish this, I had to actually take the "long" route to my restaurant, five blocks…phew…it might take me 6 minutes to get to work today instead of the typical 4. I had never been down Oak Street before, I'm not sure why, but at one point I had to stop my car to take a photo of the cutest white cottage house that I would have never seen if I didn't step out of the box today.

To sum it up, I added 2 minutes to my commute, saw two new cats, one memorable home and felt slightly renewed, at least for a few moments. Totally worth it.

Bucket List for Foodies {12 Things You Must Have on Your List}

So, you say that you are the ultimate foodie? You would give your left arm to eat a meal that Ferran Adria has created, snack on Beluga Caviar or to take a cooking class from Masaharu Morimoto? Here's a list of things every foodie must have on their bucket list:

1. Eat at the French Laundry
The French Laundry is known as one of the best restaurants in the World and has been awarded 3 Michelin stars. Thomas Keller is a master at his craft, but it will cost you a pretty penny. Dining here will run you about $300 per person…Ouch!

2. Hunt for Truffles
You can expect black truffles to retail at $175-$400 per pound, so hunting for them yourself is a much better option for the pocket book. Beware, they are tricky to find, hence the outrageous cost! It is best to hook up with a specialized company because they will have the trained dog and/or pig that is helping when seeking out these delicacies.

3. Create your own Cocktail
This may take some trial and error in order to achieve the perfect harmony of flavors and may also require the assistance of a true mixologist. Take your time with your creation, the best part is the sampling!

4. Dismember a Chicken
Learning this skill is not only impressive, it will also save you money on buying the already dismembered parts at the butcher. Make sure you have a super sharp knife and watch your fingers! There are photo instructions at Raw Fish.

5. Make Fresh Pasta
There is nothing like the taste of fresh pasta and it is fairly easy to make, using only 3 ingredients. Click HERE for the recipe I use at my restaurant.

6. Taste Wine Directly from the Barrel
Every year Sonoma County has a weekend event strictly dedicated to Barrel Tasting. It is the perfect opportunity to learn one important step in the art of winemaking and talk to the experts.

7. Tour a Food Factory
Take a factory tour to get a close up look at how your food is processed. Many of them are free and offer an array of tasty samples! My favorite tour was of McEvoy Ranch where I learned how Olive Oil was made. For other ideas click HERE.

8. Create your Signature Dish
Every foodie has to have a signature dish, you know, the one that you are asked to bring to every family event and gets the most recipe requests.

9. Start an Herb Garden
Even if you are limited on space you can have an indoor or outdoor herb garden. The most common herbs to plant are basil, chives, dill, mint, oregano, parsley, rosemary & thyme. For instructions on how to start your garden visit eHOW.

10. Eat Escargot
I vividly remember my little Italian grandmother combing the hills in Northern California for snails. I was naive to think that she was collecting these critters as pets to add to my collection. After slathering them in a garlic butter sauce, they definitely make a better dinner than pet.

11. Collect Honey from a Beehive
Natural honey is an immunity builder, energy booster and remedy for many ailments, as well as one of the healthiest sweeteners. Though it can be purchased at many stores, that would not be quite as impressive (or exciting) as extracting it yourself. Thankfully, most beekeepers will use a smoker to subdue the bees and give you a fashionable, full-body protective suit to wear.

12. Make Ice Cream
After returning from Florence, I had a strong desire to replicate the Hazelnut gelato that I enjoyed {everyday, sometimes twice a day} at the local gelateria. Gelato is a significant part of the Italian tradition not only because of the pure indulgence of it, but mostly because having gelato in Italy is more about the experience; choosing the perfect flavor, chatting with the locals and strolling along the cobbled streets licking your prize.

33. Throw a Themed Party

The Party: Baby Shower
The Theme: Ladies Luncheon
The Colors: Pink, Cream & White

Occasionally, I like to put my Martha Stewart hat on and produce some artsy fartsy stuff…it's a good thing. Her expertise definitely helped me with the planning of my sister-in-laws baby shower and checking off this goal on my bucket list.

THE MENU
The key to the menu of a ladies luncheon theme is selecting items that are light, fresh and easy to eat. The recipes I used were either from my restaurant, Epicurious or the Food Network website. I definitely recommend trying them out weeks before the party, but I can vouch for the ones listed here!

~ Chicken Waldorf Salad
~ Harvest Quiche
~ Beet, Fennel & Citrus Salad
~ Curried Couscous
~ Bruschetta Assortment
~ Dill & Egg Salad Tea Sandwich
~ Chicken Salad & Olive Tapenade Panini
~ Mango & Peach Iced Tea
~ Pomegranate Citrus Punch
~ White Cake with Fresh Mixed Berries

THE PARTY FAVORS
After much deliberation, I decided a variety of live plants in miniature pitchers with a handmade "Watch me grow…" name tag for the party favors…so freakin' cute! I found these little containers at Ross for $2.50 each and bought the plants from Home Depot for 5 bucks a dozen. It took some time to plant all the flowers in the tiny vase openings; using just potting soil. I made sure to do them just the day before because I didn't want to take any chances that the plants would die before they made it to the party.

The tags were made using craft paper, a paper punch, a glue stick and left over Christmas ribbon. Any mediocre scrapbooker could make these with not problem. Total cost per party favor: $3.75. Total time to make: 4 hours. Totally worth it!

THE FLOWERS
Staying with the pink, cream and white theme, lilies arrangements were provided by a local florist. These made the perfect centerpiece for an already beautiful table.

After weeks of planning and research the baby shower turned out to be a huge success!

#130 Watch all the Oscar Winning Movies

Oscar Winning Movies: 82
Movies Watched: 10

The last movie I watched on this list was Slumdog Millionaire and I am claiming it to be the "best movie I have ever seen". But, than again, I am definitely lacking in the film education department. I am probably a year or two behind on the hit movies. Seeing Slumdog was just a fluke. Most of the time I can't bring myself to spend $10 on a movie ticket (plus the goodies while you are there) when I can rent it in a couple of months for 4 bucks and enjoy it in the privacy of my own home. At least at home I can multi-task while viewing; laundry gets folded, emails returned and bills paid.

I'm really not looking forward to anything prior to 1980, which was making me question why I added this goal to my list at all. What's a movie without the profanity and nudity anyway? But then I realized that this bucket list was not only about achieving goals, but about trying new things to see if they might be part of the passion I am looking for.
