5 Bucket List Books Reviewed

The Wish List, Barbara Ann Kipfer
Written by the same author as 14,000 Things to be Happy About, The Wish List is a catalogue of close to 6,000 unexpected goals, everything from write a love poem to watch the sun set over Machu Picchu. The best part about this book is the massive amount of aspirations that are listed, you'll be sure to find quite a few to add to your own life-to-do-list. They even include blank spots for you to incorporate anything they might have missed. The problem is that the goals are not categorized in any way, so make sure you mark everything you are interested in the first time around because you most likely won't be able to find it again. The Wish List is strictly a "list" book, if you are looking for inspirational anecdotes or educational information, this is not the one for you.

5 Bucket List Goals From This Book: Live in a Castle with a Moat, Be a Train Conductor, Adopt a Pet from the Humane Society, Play PacMan and Fly a Cargo Plane.

101 Things To Before You Die, Richard Horne
Richard Horne has also written 101 Things NOT to do Before You Die. This book features 101 of, what seems like, the most popular bucket list goals, such as, see the space shuttle launch and ride the world's biggest roller coasters. This is a fun life-to-do List book with journal space to keep track of goals achieved, star stickers so you can reward yourself upon completion and informative factoids about each one. Once completed, it can be kept as somewhat of an autobiography of your adventures. The only negative is, due to the limited amount of goals, you most likely will just use this as a supplement to your own list.

5 Bucket List Goals From This Book: Catch a Fish with Your Bare Hands, Meet Your Idol, Invent Something, Bungee Jump and Crash an A-List Party.

2,001 Things to Do Before You Die, Dane Sherwood
2,001 Things to Do Before You Die is a handy check list that is the shorter version of The Wish List (mentioned above). Just like Kipfers book, this is just a list of goals with sporadic inspirational quotes throughout. Some of the aspirations are redundant (ie: get call waiting & get rid of call waiting) and highly unlikely (like waking up next to Brad Pitt). If I had to choose between the two bucket list books, I would opt for The Wish List instead.

5 Bucket List Goals From This Book: Kiss the Blarney Stone, Make Paper Dolls, Build an Igloo, Be Silent for a Week and Start a Pillow Fight.

This Book Will Change Your Life, Benrick
This book is a highly illustrated guide for living a hysterical life for the next 365 days. If you are looking to mix-it-up for the next year with kooky, fun goals than choose this book. For instance, on Day 84 you will throw away an apple core in a park, mark the spot and come back in 20 years to see your apple tree and on Day 197 you will improve your signature. This may not be the inspirational bucket list you are looking for, but it will prove to be amusing and entertaining.

5 Bucket List Goals From This Book: Choose your Final Meal on Death Row and Make it, Be on the Lookout for the Paranormal, Walk Barefoot on Grass, Try a Food that Scares You and Get a Hobby.

1,000 Places to See Before You Die, Patricia Schultz
This book is the Big Daddy of all life lists for travel. If you have ever thought about going there, it is probably listed here. It is a hard core reference book, that has just as much information as inspiration. This is a tightly researched guide, which includes intriguing trivia and photographs. The only issue is trying to decide where to go on your first adventure; Halong Bay, Lizard Island Resort or Manual Antonio National Park?

5 Bucket List Goals From This Book: Hike at Yosemite National Park, Bike Great Ocean Road, Balloon in Burgandy, Dog Sled in Scandanavia and Fish at Li River.

Bucket List for Couples {9 Things Every Couple Must Do}

A couples relationship should be filled with experiences that create wonderful memories, bring them closer together and nonverbally say "I love you". Here are nine ways to start designing your life together.

1. Couples Massage
A couples massage is one of the hottest treatments at luxury spas all over the world. What could be more romantic than lying side-by-side with your significant other in the most relaxing environment?

2. Write a Love Letter
Let's bring it back to old school; the days where letters were handwritten, sealed with a kiss and mailed at the post office. Love letters are a physical memory that will last a lifetime.

3.Cook Dinner Together
Food and romance have be linked throughout history, mix in some intriguing conversation and you have the best date night ever. The dishes that you create on this night will become a significant part of celebrating other events in your lifetime.

3. Have a Picnic
Break out the old picnic basket, pack your favorite bottle of wine, pick a secluded outdoor getaway and create a memory.

4. Stay up all Night, Laughing
There are many reasons that we stay up all night, how many of them include just laughing?

5. Sing a Karaoke Duet
12 years ago, my husband and I sang "Summer Nights" from Grease at a local Karaoke club. Though the musicality left much to be desired and they actually turned the volume down on my microphone, it is an experience that we still talk about.

6. Carve your Names into a Tree
I typically would not recommend defacing a living object, but in the name of Bucket Lists I will have to break this rule.

7. Dress up for Halloween
Fairy tales can come true, at least on Halloween. What could bring a couple closer together than looking completely ridiculous as a team?

8. Kiss on Top of the Ferris Wheel
Some of the most romantic movies feature a smooch on the tippy-top of the Ferris Wheel.

9. Watch the sunset & rise in one day
You might be able to complete this one as well as, #3 {Have a Picnic} & #4 {Stay Up All Night, Laughing} all in one day! Now that's the ultimate in multi-tasking.

Seven Smashing {& Maybe Forgotten} Posts

After many years of writing, sometimes you need to revisit your older posts to see where you have been, know how you arrived at where you are and make a plan for where you are going. At times these posts may have been forgotten, but are worth remembering because they have helped create the journal of My Bucket List Journey.

1. My First Post
My first post was "Bucket List Item #1 Learn Italian". All I can say is be kind and remember that this was my FIRST somewhat pathetic post! It's funny to me that, at the time, I felt that I had a clear direction of what I wanted my blog to be. Now, what it has morphed into is so much more amazing than that!

2. The Post I Enjoyed Writing the Most
Easy peasy lemon squezzy! That's not the name of the post, just an indication that I didn't have to put any thought into my choice. On my 40th birthday I wrote the post "Write a Letter to your Future Self", it is a beautiful letter about exactly how I felt at that point in my life. Reading it always puts a tear in my eye and I am determined to write a letter on every birthday.

3. My Most Rewarding Post
Last Christmas, my husband and I organized a toy drive at our restaurant where we collected 108 toys for Toys for Tots. I wrote the post "Donate Toys at the Holidays" in hopes of inspiring others to add this goal to their bucket lists.

4. A Post on Someone Else's Blog That I Wish I Had Written
Ramblings of a Woman wrote an inspiring post called "Someday is a Dangerous Word". It epitomizes what Bucket Lists are all about, changing the word "someday" to "now".

5. A Post I Can't Wait to Write
I can't wait to write a post about how I am in the Guinness Book of World Records for doing something crazily wonderful!

6. A Post that I Wish More People Read
"16 Ways to Stay Motivated" is a post that most goal oriented people would benefit from. I have to read it from time to time in order to give my motivation a kick in the butt!

7. My Most Visited Post
I wrote the post "Ride a Zip Line" after going to Costa Rica and checking this item off my bucket list.

Bucket List for Foodies {12 Things You Must Have on Your List}

So, you say that you are the ultimate foodie? You would give your left arm to eat a meal that Ferran Adria has created, snack on Beluga Caviar or to take a cooking class from Masaharu Morimoto? Here's a list of things every foodie must have on their bucket list:

1. Eat at the French Laundry
The French Laundry is known as one of the best restaurants in the World and has been awarded 3 Michelin stars. Thomas Keller is a master at his craft, but it will cost you a pretty penny. Dining here will run you about $300 per person…Ouch!

2. Hunt for Truffles
You can expect black truffles to retail at $175-$400 per pound, so hunting for them yourself is a much better option for the pocket book. Beware, they are tricky to find, hence the outrageous cost! It is best to hook up with a specialized company because they will have the trained dog and/or pig that is helping when seeking out these delicacies.

3. Create your own Cocktail
This may take some trial and error in order to achieve the perfect harmony of flavors and may also require the assistance of a true mixologist. Take your time with your creation, the best part is the sampling!

4. Dismember a Chicken
Learning this skill is not only impressive, it will also save you money on buying the already dismembered parts at the butcher. Make sure you have a super sharp knife and watch your fingers! There are photo instructions at Raw Fish.

5. Make Fresh Pasta
There is nothing like the taste of fresh pasta and it is fairly easy to make, using only 3 ingredients. Click HERE for the recipe I use at my restaurant.

6. Taste Wine Directly from the Barrel
Every year Sonoma County has a weekend event strictly dedicated to Barrel Tasting. It is the perfect opportunity to learn one important step in the art of winemaking and talk to the experts.

7. Tour a Food Factory
Take a factory tour to get a close up look at how your food is processed. Many of them are free and offer an array of tasty samples! My favorite tour was of McEvoy Ranch where I learned how Olive Oil was made. For other ideas click HERE.

8. Create your Signature Dish
Every foodie has to have a signature dish, you know, the one that you are asked to bring to every family event and gets the most recipe requests.

9. Start an Herb Garden
Even if you are limited on space you can have an indoor or outdoor herb garden. The most common herbs to plant are basil, chives, dill, mint, oregano, parsley, rosemary & thyme. For instructions on how to start your garden visit eHOW.

10. Eat Escargot
I vividly remember my little Italian grandmother combing the hills in Northern California for snails. I was naive to think that she was collecting these critters as pets to add to my collection. After slathering them in a garlic butter sauce, they definitely make a better dinner than pet.

11. Collect Honey from a Beehive
Natural honey is an immunity builder, energy booster and remedy for many ailments, as well as one of the healthiest sweeteners. Though it can be purchased at many stores, that would not be quite as impressive (or exciting) as extracting it yourself. Thankfully, most beekeepers will use a smoker to subdue the bees and give you a fashionable, full-body protective suit to wear.

12. Make Ice Cream
After returning from Florence, I had a strong desire to replicate the Hazelnut gelato that I enjoyed {everyday, sometimes twice a day} at the local gelateria. Gelato is a significant part of the Italian tradition not only because of the pure indulgence of it, but mostly because having gelato in Italy is more about the experience; choosing the perfect flavor, chatting with the locals and strolling along the cobbled streets licking your prize.

16 Ways to Stay Motivated

Motivation is something that can make your dreams come true…or not. It is completely natural for your ambition to be at different stages during the lifetime of your goal. But, it is important to dig deep and press on, especially when the outcome is not initially what you expect. Even though I consider myself a highly motivated person, there are days when I have to refer to this list for inspiration.

1. Think positive. Challenge all your negative thoughts, replace them with positive ones. Try to stay away from dream squashers.

2. Journal. Keep a daily journal of the progress you have made and the thoughts related to that progress.

3. Be clear. Define your goals so they are not "fuzzy". Make your direction clear and concise.

4. Go public. Make you commitment public so there is some accountability involved. You can do this by telling your friends & family or announcing it on a social website, such as Facebook.

5. Commit. Make a commitment to do one step a day towards achieving your goal, no matter how big or small.

6. Get support. Connect with someone who has your same goal or is a support system for you and share your experiences.

7. Reward. Give yourself kudos for even the slightest progress.

8. Persistence. Realize that hard work is the way to achieve goals. Be persistent in your efforts.

9. Find inspiration. Read about others who have achieved what you are trying to do.

10. Share progress. Choose a forum to share your progress.

11. Mini-goals. Break your one big goal into several littles goals.

12. Dream. Keep dreaming and visualize what your goal will look like when it becomes a reality.

13. Be proactive. Don't wait for the goal to magically happen, make it happen.

14. Escape. Take a break from your goal every now and then.

15. Have consequences. Decide what they will be for not moving forward towards your goal.

16. Stick with it. Even when your motivation is lacking, pull through it. The motivation will eventually come back.

5 New Things Added to My Bucket List Journey

159. Sew something you can wear
I have taken one 6-week sewing class in my life where I learned how to make a shirt that I never wore. I'm hoping with these limited skills that I can actually create something wearable and maybe even attractive!

160. Create your own cocktail
I am strictly a red wine girl, so this may be challenging for me. My head is already racing with ideas of what liquor I can mix with my favorite vino to make it a cocktail.

161. Visit a butterfly sanctuary
Having hundreds of these delicate creatures flying about your head sounds like a dream to me.

162. Go to the movies by yourself
This doesn't  terrify me terribly, but I will be sitting in the back row…maybe even wearing a hat and sunglasses!

163. Learn how to create the perfect "smokey eye"
Every time I put makeup on I feel like a clown, though I long to create the perfect nighttime eye that I have seen so many famous ladies have.

See my entire bucket list
