I believe we have determined that I am cheap or, as I prefer to be labeled, frugal. Not to say that I won't kick down serious cash to create a memorable experience, but sometimes free is good too. Really good. The Magic Fountain of Montjuic in Barcelona is a case where "the best things in life are free".
I have seen a fountain before, I've been to the Bellagio in Las Vegas. That counts. But, I haven't seen a Spanish fountain. Or a magic one.
The Magic Fountain of Montjuic is an impressive display of water acrobatics, colorful light and music ranging from classical to modern hits.
Luckily, this water wizardry was happening a short walk from El Tablao de Carmen where we would be watching a passionate flamenco dance that evening, this would be the perfect pre-dinner appetizer.
There were mini fountains on the way to the maxi fountain, an amouse bouche.
They were also a good indication that we were heading the right direction on Avinguda Maria Cristina. So was the lingering crowd of people.
The fountain did its dance every couple of minutes, and it was tantalizing. It could have even been magical If I wasn't sandwiched in between hundreds of other tourists.
The crowd was understandable because FREE + MEMORABLE = CROWDS
Even so, I give two thumbs up for the stunning display of agua at Magic Fountain. Monjuic is a must.
Within the same area there are plenty of other attractions if water works are not your only thing; the Olympic Stadium, Castell de Montjuic, Museu Nacional D'Art de Catalunya and Palau Nacional.
It would be easy to spend several hours in this area of Montjuic, but we had some Spanish flamenco to see.

One of my favorite things to do in Barcelona. Where did those 4 columns come from that they put in front of the fountain? It ruins the view. They were not there on my last trip in 2010.

The fountain at night is spectacular too. We were lucky enough to get there right before it turned dark, so we got to see it both ways.

Barcelona definitely is not lacking in beauty
I feel the same way about street performers, some who actually do perform magic! haha This is free entertainment and I really appreciate those places that make these performers and performances (such as these fountains) a part of the cultural experience. Taking in the sites and sounds of a place are free and rewarding. Experience a place through your senses, it's always free when you look at it this way
